Pocket gophers, Thomomys species, often simply called gophers, are burrowing rodents. They are often confused with moles as both are seldom seen  by  humans and spend their life underground. Moles feed on insects, worms, and other invertebrates while Pocket Gophers are burrowing rodents that feed on the roots of vegetation.
Northern Pocket gophers live underground year-round in burrow systems that are often extensive and elaborate. ​ They are greyish-brown in color with short legs, stocky body and small ears and eyes, comparing Richardson's Squirrel or commonly seen gopher. They are  easily distinguished by their nearly naked tails. The pocket gopher actually uses its tail as a sensitive navigation tool that allows it to travel backward quickly through its tunnels.

Near or around their tunnel entrances may have mounds of excavated soil, often called molehills, resembling a pocket gopher excavated soil mount but easily distinguishable. 
Voles or Meadow Mice is a field mice, though burrow underground runways system, not tunnels like pocket gopher and mole. Contrary, voles can be seen during day time as many species occupy both above and below ground.
