Pocket Gopher Control Affecting Structure

Pocket Gopher Control Is Simple With Bro Pest Control

Pocket gophers, Thomomys species, often simply called gophers, are burrowing rodents. They are often confused with moles as both are seldom seen  by  humans and spend their life underground. Moles feed on insects, worms, and other invertebrates while Pocket Gophers are burrowing rodents that feed on the roots of vegetation.
Northern Pocket gophers live underground year-round in burrow systems that are often extensive and elaborate. They are greyish-brown in color with short legs, stocky body and small ears and eyes, comparing Richardson's Squirrel or commonly seen gopher. They are  easily distinguished by their nearly naked tails. The pocket gopher actually uses its tail as a sensitive navigation tool that allows it to travel backward quickly through its tunnels.

Pocket Gopher, Voles and Moles in your yard; all are quite different in shape, habits, and food they eat
Moles do not inhabit Alberta, uniquely have  small eyes, concealed ears, and front paddle-shaped feet designed for digging. Unlike pocket gopher and voles, moles are mostly predatory, eating earthworms, grubs, and other soil-dwelling arthropods. Like Pocket Gopher, Mole digs deep below-ground tunnels as well as surface tunnels. Near or around their tunnel entrances may have mounds of excavated soil, often called molehills, resembling a pocket gopher excavated soil mount but easily distinguishable.
Voles or Meadow Mice is a field mice, though burrow underground runways system, not tunnels like pocket gopher and mole. Contrary, voles can be seen during day time as many species occupy both above and below ground.

Problems Due to Pocket Gophers

Single northern pocket gopher’s family has been shown to create tunnels exceeding 100 metres in length. For home owners Gopher damage trees and shrubs through root feeding and girdling. They are very cumbersome for gardeners as a high gopher population creates mounds on a daily basis and considers it as infestation.
In rural communities in case of high population, unseen tunnels may cover huge areas of land. Their extensive burrow system and the surface mounds reduced farm machinery efficiency, damage to harvesting equipment, higher cropland preparation costs and forage quality loss due to loose soil incorporated in bales are all expensive problems that reduce farm income. Gopher also damages above ground crops and can reduce alfalfa yields.
