What Do Look Like

The adult boxelder bug is about 1/2 inch long, black with three red lines on the upper body (thorax; the part just behind the head), and on wings a diagonal red line on each wing. It is not necessary for young to feed on boxelder trees, instead they are adopted to feed on other vegetation near boxelder trees until seeds are formed on the tree, on which they start to feed.
