What They Look Like; Singing Insect of Alberta

Field Cricket, as the name suggests, is an outdoor or in lawn invading insect. This insect resembles a grasshopper in appearance, shiny black or dark brown in color and about 1 inch long as adults. This insect has the ability to jump which helps him to escape from predators and move fast because of having large hind legs and most have well-developed wings. Nymphs are similar but are smaller and lack wings. Both have long, slender antennae. The other prominent identification is, its male ability to make a chirping sound by rubbing the wings together or by rubbing the wings on their legs.

How Filed Cricket Survive

The field crickets live in a variety of habitats, including fields, trees, burrows, caves and even garbage dumps. Until weather moist they stay in their natural habitat, and when dry season on, field crickets often leave their ditches and fields and move in masses due to food shortage and they invade homes in search of vegetation or food in and around buildings.

They overwinter as eggs that have been laid in moist soil of roadside ditches, meadows, fields and along fences and in dry soils in cracks that tend to hold a bit of moisture in September. Hatching begins in May. Eight or nine moults are required to reach maturity over a period of about 90 day. The nymphs are very similar in appearance to adults and feed on vegetative material. When weeds begin to harden and die and rain is sparse, crickets often leave their ditches and fields and move in masses. This is when they come into homes and buildings. Crickets eat a variety of materials and are cannibalistic. After egg laying, the adults die when freezing weather starts.
